Most people also bring:

You may NOT bring:
Microwaves, electrical cords (only power surge protector strips please), toaster ovens, hotplates or other cooking appliances, halogen or octopus lamps, window air conditioners, water beds, home-constructed lofts or, of course, any kind of weapon, drugs and alcohol.
We strongly encourage you to invest in renters insurance or make sure you are covered under your parents' home owners or renters insurance. This will help you to protect your personal belongings while living on campus.
Check-in is easy
Our professional residence hall staff begins planning in the spring so the process is smooth and easy for all students. Don't forget your UB card or other form of picture ID. You need it to check in to your residence hall room.
When should I arrive?
It depends on your room assignment. The first few days of check-in are for first-year and transfer students and check-in times are staggered by room assignment.

Odd-numbered Floors Start time 9 am
Even-numbered Floors Start time 11 am
*Early Arrival - In order to have adequate time to prepare our buildings, early arrivals will not be permitted. However, if you have an academic commitment that requires you to be on campus before your assigned check-in day, you must contact UB's Residential Operations Office at (716) 645-2171 to obtain permission. These requests must be received by Friday, August 3, 2009 for consideration and there will be an additional room charge of $50 per day.
* Late Arrival - Assigned rooms will be held until 5 pm, Monday, August 31, 2009. If you are checking in after this date, please notify UB's Residential Operations Office so we may hold your room. Students who do not check in by this time and fail to notify us forfeit their space in the residence halls and their $200 deposit. Staffing and services, including food and transportation, are minimal prior to August 27 so early arrivals are not permitted.
Where do I Check-In?
Note to First-Year and Returning Students: If you are arriving after Wed., Aug. 26, 2009, you must check in at the location listed below that corresponds with your room assignment.
South Campus Clement- First Floor Lobby Goodyear- Tent Outside Goodyear, Michael, Pritchard & Schoellkopf - Tent located near Tower Lot
North Campus Ellicott Complex Fargo, Porter, Red Jacket Quads- Main lounge in each quad located on 2nd floor of building, Richmond, Spaulding, Wilkeson Quad- Outside at tents located near each quad
Governors Complex Clinton, Dewey, Lehman, & Roosevelt- 108 Lehman Hall.
Where Do I Go Once I Get to UB?
When you arrive, look for signs to your check-in point. University Police will direct you or look for staff and volunteers in September Welcome Shirts - they're there to help. Parking lots will be clearly marked. Check here for a campus map.
Residence hall staff will help you check in. At check-in tents you'll receive your room key, and other related materials. If you bought a computer through UB Micro, you may pick it up at UB Micro tents located near the check-in areas.
How to Unload
University Police officers will direct you to temporary parking designated for unloading. You may pull your car close to the residence halls to unload. After unloading you'll need to move your car to a nearby lot.
Thoughts on moving into the Residence Halls at University at Buffalo
One of the most common questions we hear is, "What should I bring with me to college?" This is a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer to bring very little, while others bring two cars packed to the roof. Two things to remember are: 1) you won't be living alone, and 2) storage is nonexistent. In other words, don't bring too much. Talk to your roommate about what they are bringing.
Approximate Room Sizes- Single: 130 square feet
- Double: 210 square feet
- Triple: 300 square feet
- Quad: 320 square feet
- Wardrobe Closet 32 inches wide (available in split rooms in Ellicott, Singles in Clement and Goodyear, Macdonald, Pritchard, Schoellkopf and Michael)
- Ellicott Complex Closet 35-45 inches wide
- Governors Closet 34-43 inches wide
- Goodyear and Clement Walk-In Closet 40-50 inches wide
Refrigerators must be no larger than 4.2 cubic feet and 3 amps, and only one such refrigerator per double room is allowed. For those students living in a quad, one refrigerator no larger than 6 cubic feet and 3 amps or two refrigerators no larger than 4.2 cubic feet and 3 amps are allowed.
What will fit?Depends on your room. We have over 38 different room layouts. We strongly encourage you to talk with your roommate, plan to send some stuff back home, and focus on your core needs and supplies. In a double or single room a futon, couch or loveseat probably will not fit. In a quad or triple, a small futon or loveseat/oversized chair might. It all depends on how you want to rearrange-do you want a designated equal sized space for each person? If yes, then you will need more floor space to do so.
We do not allow lofting or bunked beds. Bed springs rest on head and footboards at adjustable heights. Beds cannot be raised more than 34" (their highest level) and at this level have between 22-29" of clearance underneath.
Advice for Parents and Guardians- Resist the urge to panic. It will be all right. You've raised them this far and they'll be fine.
- Think about doing something special together after the big drop-off. Regardless of what you're feeling right now, it is an emotional day for most.
- Resist the urge to "drop in" for a visit. Give your student time to adjust before you make plans for a visit.
- Be patient, flexible and go with the flow.
- Think about doing something special for your parents. Leave a nice note that they will find when they get home.
- Don't invite your parents to spend the night.
- If you're a returning student, you know how the new students are feeling. Lend a hand and welcome them to the UB family.
